ASB in Much Wenlock: This Behaviour Will Not Be Tolerated

Over recent weeks, we have received a number of reports of anti-social behaviour in Much Wenlock, including:

• Vandalism and damage to benches on the Gaskell Playing Fields
• Individuals banging on residents' doors during the early hours of the morning, causing significant distress, fear and anxiety, particularly amongst older members of our community
• A group of four teenagers setting fire to donated second-hand books beneath the Corn Exchange last night
• Burnt books also being found on the Gaskell Playing Fields and Windmill Hill

The criminal offences involved include arson and criminal damage. The individuals responsible have been identified and will be dealt with accordingly.

1. What do we want the public to know?

This behaviour is completely unacceptable. Setting fires in public places, damaging community facilities and causing alarm to residents puts people at risk and has a significant impact on our town. These incidents are being investigated as criminal offences and appropriate action is being taken.

The recent fires are particularly concerning given the current dry conditions. Discarded or deliberately lit fires can spread rapidly, posing a serious risk to life, property, emergency responders, wildlife and the wider environment.

As part of our ongoing work to tackle anti-social behaviour, which remains a local policing priority, we will continue to work with partners and the community to identify offenders and address concerns.

2. What do we want the public to feel?

We want residents to feel reassured that reports are taken seriously and that action is being taken when offences occur. Equally, we want young people and their parents to understand the potentially devastating consequences of what may be viewed as a prank or moment of foolish behaviour.

Actions have consequences. What starts as nuisance behaviour can quickly escalate into serious criminal offences with significant risks to public safety.

3. What do we want the public to do?

We would ask parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers and consequences of anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and fire-setting. Please encourage them to think about the impact their actions can have on other people, on community facilities, on wildlife and on the environment, particularly during periods of dry weather when the risk of fire is heightened.
